Irina Dobrescu - Illustrator and Storyteller

It seems I was always destined for the life of an illustrator, combining a love for drawing with an equal devotion to books. This path fulfills my deep need to express myself through nearly exclusive artistic means, allowing me to convey what words alone cannot.

My art draws its strength from the battery of my own desires and the wealth of stories from around the world, large and small. At times, creating feels like a kind of personal therapy—”inner child therapy,” “shadow work,” and “active imagination” each finding a place in my process. I begin by speaking to the child within me, and I soon find that others feel that same connection—children, as well as adults who carry their own inner child along with them. This artistic journey has allowed me to build a collection of tools that help me create whole worlds.

Inspiration often springs from my everyday life, as well as from those around me—each becoming, in their own way, a muse or model for my work. Their presence fuels my imagination and gently guides my hand.

Every drawing is like casting a line, hoping to catch a glimmer of what I would call my soul. I long to draw it out into the light, into the world, and invite it to play.
